National Museum of Colombo

History comes alive

Commissioned by the then British Governor in Ceylon, Sir William Henry Gregory, Colombo National Museum is Sri Lanka’s largest and foremost Museum. Despite its British influence, the distinct architecture of the edifice is inspired by Italian design. The Museum was opened to public on January 1, 1872.
